Dr. McSelfish matches Kingers Big Guns for dramatic 4-3 win on 1/9!

Just how good are the Avs? If you had any opportunity to watch this game you would have seen for yourself. They beat the Storm Kings convincingly in a tight game where the Storm Kings had a full line-up and both of their star players (Coakley and Hogg) AND in the return of Andy Weber to the Kingers blueline that has solidified their back end as perhaps the best and deepest in the UVHL. Now THAT is impressive! It all happened at the end of the second period (more later on that) when McSelfish turned the game in favor of the Avs, and then the Avs held on while Bartline was stupendous in net and the Avs played strong D holding off a desperate 6-on-5, and brief 6-on-4, Storm Kings attack.

In the first Kings D Artie Stout started the scoresheet with a penalty for bodychecking at 12:15, and the Avs continued the PP momentum by scoring on Nick Bayley's shot seconds after the penalty expired from linemate Christian Isaac at 10:01. Tom Scull went to the Kings box at 6:49 for hooking, and less than a minute after that expired it was the Avs Chris Johnson guilty of tripping at 4:06. Adam Hogg tied the game on the ensuing PP from Scull. Stout returned to the box at 2:01 for high sticking, but the scoring ended with the period tied 1-1.

Sean Coakley put the Storm Kings on top at 10:21 of the second from Scull, who notched his second assist on two Kings goals. Soon after John Murphy went to the Kingers box for bodychecking at 9:12 as the game became more and more physical. Space was tight and time with the puck was short as these teams hustled and worked for every inch on the Union Arena ice. Chris Johnson found some room with his speed and tied the game 2-2 with a nice one assisted by linemate Travis Coe at 5:31. Late in the second Avs sub Chris Adams found Isaac with a pass, and then Isaac fed Bayley for the go-ahead goal with only 21 seconds in the period. THEN, Bayley won the face-off at center ice, took the puck and curled back into the neutral zone, picked up speed and beat the Kings right winger, center, and right D with sick moves and speed, went into the slot and found the back of the net with an absolutely sick, fucking retarded, incredible goal that will be etched in my memory for a long time. It was Meyer-esque, and it changed the game in an instant, and in 12 seconds Nick Bayley, Dr. McSelfish himself, almost singlehandedly turned the tide of this game and beat the Storm Kings elite players (who were all on the ice at the time, who he smoked face-to-face for the goal) at their own game - skill, speed and finesse. If the McSelfish moniker hadn't stuck already, I'd consider Dr. McFuckingretardedselfishbastardsickgoalscorer instead, but it takes too long to type that anyway.

The third period was a penalty-fest as the emotions ran high. The Storm Kings seemed shocked at the events of the final seconds of the second period, and surely if any team has the firepower to make a comeback, it was the Storm Kings. Too bad penalties ruined momentum, and great goaltending was there when the chances presented themselves, but there was great action at both ends again. Singe Arnold went to the Kings box for interference at 12:13, and was soon joined by Dean Cashman at 12:00 for hooking to give the Avs a 5-on-3. Frenchy stood his ground and kept his team in it with hope for a comeback. They had their chance with Coe in the Avs box at 8:10 for cross-checking, and this time Bartline held off the potent Storm Kings attack. It was two in a row for Coe at 4:41 for roughing, but he was joined by Kings F Murph for the identical infraction and offsetting minors. With the goalie pulled with about a minute and a half to go, the Storm Kings pounded Bartline and could only solve him on a rebound that somehow found its way in with only 52 seconds to go after Coakley got his second of the game assisted by Dean Cashman. The Avs held off the final attempts of the Storm Kings, and the intensity was high. Isaac found himself with a roughing, unsportsmanlike, and a misconduct with 0:09 seconds to go, but the Avs held off the brief 6-on-4 for the emotional win.
