Avs force Bruins to shootout # 2!

The rematch was alot like the first. For the second time this season and the second meeting between these two teams the contest was decided in a UVHL OT shootout. The only action besides saves by Hadley at the Bruins end and saves by Beraldi at the Avs end was an early goal by Rob Pelletier at 14:16 from Marrazzo and DeSchamp getting it started right for his Bruins. Tony DeFelice followed-up the Pelletier goal to make it 2-0 Bruins at 13:57 of the second from Andy Holland. Jami James answered for the Avs playing on forward for most of the game scoring moments later at 13:09 from dangerous linemate Markus Eriksson and defenseman Kevin Calder. Eriksson and James connected again, this time on the PP while Holland was in the box for the Bruins for high sticking, at 11:13 to tie the game at 2 up. Avs forward Caleb hawley was called for interference with 5:31 left to go in the period, but the Bruins did not score. Late in the period Avs forward Chris Johnson put his squad up by a goal at 1:27 from Mike Hickey and ??? (a player listed on the game sheet as # 15, but there is no # 15 for either team, so e-mail us and let us know if it was you!). Again to start a period the Bruins were strong, and they tied the game at 3 apiece at 14:14 of the third on Rob Pelletier's second goal of the game from defenseman Mike Harrington. Several minutes of tough play and back and forth action ensued, including an Avs PP with Bruins forward Don Powers in the box at 12:23 for hooking, finally culminated by Tony DeFelice's second goal to put the Bruins up 4-3 with 7:40 to go, this time from linemates Don Powers and Matt Marrazzo. Shortly after the Bruins goal the Avs took an undisciplined penalty at 7:30 on Fred McNutt's tripping minor, but Beraldi kept his team in it as the surging Bruins got several quality chances for a 2-goal lead, but no dice! Beraldi was on! Several chances were exchanged at both ends, and Hadley made some key saves of his own with both pads and his glove seeing some action in the Bruins net. Late in the game Johnson raced for the loose puck behind the Bruins net that careened off his stick and Scott Fraser took some body from behind that shoved Johnson's head and shoulder into the dasher that referee Gary Laperle wisely could not ignore, and the Avs went on the PP with 1:44 to go. Protests from Fraser were ignored, as was the ref's temptation to add another 2 minutes for unsportsmanlike, and Fraser went to the box frustrated with the call and arguing all the way. During the ensuing PP Jami James controlled the play for the Avs, but Hadley rejected a couple of close calls with strong play of his own until Bruins forward Rob Pelletier grabbed an Avs stick in sight of the refs on the PK with a most untimely penalty and put his team down 5-on-3 with only 40 seconds to go to keep their 1-goal lead. Thirteen seconds into the 6-on-3 with Beraldi on the Avs bench it was Chris 'Clutch' Johnson with the game-tieing goal to force an OT shootout with 0:27 left in regulation. However, the Bruins continued to show grit and heart and got TWO quality chances on Beraldi in the dieing seconds of the game, one I believe was even off the post!

OVERTIME!
In the shootout, Eriksson deked Hadley to his right side and found net beyond the right pad to make it 5-4 for the Avs. Bruin hero Jay Smith was stoned by Beraldi in the Avs net to keep it at 5-4 in favor of the Avs. Hadley then rejected Johnson's bid for a hat trick with a beauty glove save. Marrazzo's quality attempt was denied by Beraldi leaving it to James for the win, and James did not disappoint doing almost the mirror image deke of teammate Eriksson finding space beyond Hadley's left pad for the 6-4 go home shootout winner to end this evenly matched, hard fought and exciting UVHL game!
