Nords hand Storm Kings first loss of season

After rolling through the cycle of 5 UVHL opponents the Storm Kings appeared untouchable. At 5-0 they were winning by large margins, the least of which was a 5 goal lead when the buzzer sounded against the Nords on opening night, and there was talk of a mercy rule because of their dominance. However, the Storm Kings will not tie or break the UVHL Red Wings' regular season record of 11-0-1 from Season 1 as the Nords took advantage of a light squad of 8 Kingers and led almost the entire game. The Nords had former 2003-04 Bob Gaudet Goaltender of the Year, John Turner, out of town on business and unable to defend the pipes, and had to turn to Woodstock high school goalie Jon Chamberlin for help in the crease. The Storm Kings were only able to obtain the services of Greg Gosselin, Stu Close, Andy Weber, Rick Hughes, Singe Arnold, John Murphy, Tom Scull and Ryan Sinclair in addition to their goaltender and GM Dan French, while the Nords had a full squad and were only missing Dan Jones and Jason Gaudette. The Nords started pressuring early and did not allow the Kings to jump out to an early lead and coast to victory. Greg Marsh got the scoring started breaking out of his 5 game slump and streak of falling down all by himself as the skates were sharpened and his hard low shot fooled Frenchy and found the back of the net at 10:07 of the first from Mike O'Neil and Tom Dakai. Ryan Sinclair, just back from a hamstring injury, equalized the score for the Kings only 20 seconds later with Singe Arnold getting the assist. Almost 7 minutes of scoreless and tied hockey continued until the Nords' hot newcomer Will Meyer added to his already impressive totals with a goal at 2:53 from defensemen Ben Robbins and Tom Dakai, only to be followed by Ian Coates scoring 36 seconds later from Meyer and linemate Deanna McDevitt making it 3-1 for the Nords. McDermott and Hughes traded offsetting minors for slashing at 3:15 of the first and went to the box and felt shame. The Nords contnued their momentum and scored with 1 second to go in the first on captain Tao Smith's goal from linemates Dave Willis and Poli Nightingale. Early in the second the Nords scored again at 13:58 with Coates getting his second of the game, this time from Meyer and Dakai, each earning their third point of the night thus far. Sinclair answered with his second goal for the Kings at 13:04 from Murphy and Weber. Marshy wasn't finished and scored back-to-back goals at 12:31 and at 9:40 from Dyke Shaw and McDermott, and from Meyer and O'Neil respectively. The Kings' Tom Scull was charged with a tripping minor on the play of the third Marsh goal, but it was negated by the goal. Robbins and Murphy exchanged roughing pleasantries at 11:55 and sat simultaneously for 2 minutes. The Kings' Singe Arnold added an unassisted goal to go with his assist at 8:16 to make it 7-3 in favor of the Nords. Meyer and Coates connected again at 3:54 but Sinclair attempted to pull the Kings closer and mount a comeback with back-to-back goals of his own from Gosselin and Weber at 1:37 and Murphy and Gosselin at 0:12 making it 4 goals for Sinclair. Nobody can say that the absence of Sean Coakley was the reason for the King's loss as Sinclair did an admirable and effective job of picking them up on his shoulders trying for the victory. The second period was played even as both squads tallied 4 goals apiece and the score stood at 8-5, definitely within range of a Storm Kings comeback. The Nordiques made sure that didn't happen scoring 35 seconds into the third on a Mike O'Neil goal and Marshy's fourth point of the night, also assisted by Kelly Park who finally started scoring for his real team instead of getting ridiculous points for the Storm Kings on double duty who appeared to desperately miss his services on this night. Will Meyer completed the hat trick, and thankfully so as Frenchy stoned him on at least two breakaways, at 13:54 assisted by linemate Deanna McDevitt with her second assist of the night putting a comeback out of reach even for the Storm Kings. Rick Hughes blasted a howitzer over the left shoulder of Chamberlin at 9:29 assisted by Weber as it was the only small hole available in the butterfly goalie's huge frame and enormously large oversize pads (were those pads legal? I think I hear a Storm Kings' protest!). Coates completed his hat trick at 8:58 from linemates Meyer and McDevitt (again). O'Neil got a roughing minor at 5:31 and during the PK McDermott gained possession of the puck in the Nords end and fed it to Shaw on the left wing as he broke out of the Nords end with Marsh in-tow on a 3-on-1. Looking for the head-man pass McDermott proved too anxious and was just offside on Marsh's pass, but continued with his head of steam shooting the puck into the open left side of the net as Frenchy stepped aside. A few minutes after the Nords killed off the infraction O'Neil potted another goal with only 52 seconds left to make it 12-6. Park howled about invoking the mercy rule on the very team it was meant to restrain, but the Hughes-Weber combo answered 11 seconds later for the Kings to finish the scoring at 12-7 in favor of the Nordiques quelling the Storm at a 5 game unbeaten streak.
