Whalers, Dead River...Round 2
ODDS: | Whalers By 4 Goals |
OVER/UNDER: | 10 Goals |
The Whaler's got their first win of the season in week three over the hapless Dead River Rats...which happened to be their third straight loss en route to their 0-7-0 start to the season. The Whaler's turned things around, winning four straight before dropping a stinker of a 10-5 game to the Gamblers last week.
The Whalers are a much better team than their start(or for that matter last game) would show. Dead River is also a better team than they were in week 3, but the Whalers are on a different trajectory. The Whalers have a truly elite player on their roster in Jumbo Joe Gaudet. Gaudet's 16 goals and 21 points in 6 games is staggering.
Dead River doesn't have that all-star calibre player and their 0-7-0 record would indicate a franchise in distress, but their future is bright. If they can keep Gaudet under control, focus on defense and work as a team, they can keep this game interesting.
My prediction...Whalers jump out early...4-0. And then the two teams swap goals for the remainder of the game. Final score 7-3.
The River is Dead....Whalers Rock Them 11-1
The woes continue for the Dead River squad in their winless 2012 season. Tonight was season low as they gave up 11, only scored 1 and seemed as though they were killing a penalty for most of the game. "Jumbo" Joe Gaudet put some distance between Cardigan's Owen Carpino in the points race with is 22nd, 23rd, 24th, 25th, 26th, 27th, 28th, 29th & YES THIRTIETH POINT OF THE SEASON. That's nine points tonight for Gaudet, 2 goals and seven assists, that's 8 more points that co-commissioner Shawn McDermott has had combined in the past 7 seasons.
Gaudet was amazing and had it not been for the Whaler's pulling their foot off the collective gas, Gaudet probably could have had 15 points. The whipping boy in net for Dead River was Paul "Ozzie" Osgood who was called up from the B-League and probably wished he didn't. Osgood wasn't great, letting in 6 goals in the first period on 10 shots. The Whaler's scored on their 1st shot of the game, 2nd shot of the game, 4th shot, 5th shot and 6th shot...not pretty. Ozzie was filling in for Matty "The Eagle" Crowson who was out of town researching Mail Order Brides. Ozzie was a late addition to the line-up since Dead River's manager, Greg "Awful Manager" Hadley is an awful manager and the commissioner had to call in Ozzie at the 11th hour to fill in against a dynamic offense...so give the poor guy some credit for having the balls to show up and play FOR Dead River AGAINST the Whalers.
Gaudet scored his two goals early and then went into passing mode, setting up everyone, even Kirt "The Skirt" Johnson scored a goal...that was low. "Big" Johnson was solid as he manned the blue line chipped in a goal and added a pair of assists.
The Whalers had big games from Jay "The Zamboni" Zanleoni(2g, 3a), Scotty "Sugar" Shaw(3g, 1a), Johnson and Woody Redpath(1g, 2a). In fact all 8 skaters on the Whaler's bench registered at least a point.
In the end, Dead River is a team in dis-array. Rumors have it that a fist-fight almost broke out in the locker room as finger pointing resulted in hurt egos. Dead River won't go anywhere until they learn how to slow things down, play east/west hockey and put the team before their personal accolades. They're young and have some talent...they just need to lear

Unfortunately, unlike that night, there wasn't a Park in the building this past Tuesday; it would have created some nice symmetry. kpark Quechee, VT
