Tonight is the game everyone has been waiting for all year, the Whalen Cup final! The #1 seed Blues will host the #2 Gamblers for the cup. The Blues have dominated the league all season long with only losing 3 games all year, one of the three losses was to the Gamblers. The Gamblers finished the season in second place and only losing 5 games all year, three of the five losses came against the Blues. Tonight's game will be hard fought battle between the top two teams in the league. The edge goes to the Blues who has dominated everyone all year long but don't look for the Gamblers to just roll over as the G-men will give them a run for their money. The Blues will hold on to this nail bitter by the score of 2-1 and win their first championship in the UVHL.
Gamblers Win the Whalen Cup!
In the Whalen Cup final we had the top two teams facing one another for the cup! The top seed Labatt Blues hosted the number two seed Gamblers. The game started out with both teams coming ready to play with full rosters and not taking any chances for the first eight minutes of play. The Blues Mike Anderson would get called for a trip at 7:29 and put the Gamblers on the games first power play. On the power play the Gamblers Ethan Gage was able to put the Gamblers up 1-0 as he tipped the puck past the Blues Jay Seals. The Gamblers would hang on to the 1-0 led after one period of play as both teams were playing hard but not wanting to make any mistakes.
First period: Blues-Seals 13 saves, Gamblers- Van Schoick- 10 saves.
In the second period the Blues started out with a power play chance as the Gamblers took a too many men penalty with 12 seconds left in the first that carried over into the second. The Gamblers would be able to kill off the penalty and resume to full strength but it would be the Blues who would get the games next power play as the Gamblers Matt Marrazzo would get called for a cross check with 9:26 remaining in the period. While on the power play the Blues would get some chances but the Gamblers Van Schoick was solid in net turning everything away. The Gamblers would take a second penalty as Ryan Bergeron would get called for slashing to give the Blues a 5 on 3 power play chance. With the Blues on a 5 on 3 power play they were able to tie the game on a goal from TJ Moran with 7:51. The Gamblers were able to kill off the second penalty but the Blues were buzzing from being on a 5 on 3 and they would grab the games next goal going up 2-1 on a goal from Justin Lawrence with 5:12 left in the period. The Gamblers would get a power play of their own with 4:54 left to play, while on the power play Matt Marrazzo was able to tie the game at the 2:57 mark. The period would end with the scored locked at two as both teams being able to capitalize on power play chances.
Second period: Blues- Seals 14 saves Gamblers- Van Schoick 11 saves
In the third with the score tied at two it was anyone's game still as both teams were playing hard and digging for the games next goal, it was the Blues who would go up 3-2 when Chad Quirion would sneak behind the Gamblers defense to go in on breakway and slide a shot past RVS to put the Blues up 3-2 with with 9:14 left in the period. With the Gamblers down 3-2 they would take the only penalty of the period with 5:39 remaining in the game. On the power play the Blues had a chance to put the game away but it was the Gamblers who would get a short handed goal when Max Woods would beat the Blues defenseman down to the puck in the Blues end. Max would coral the puck and spin to the corner, at the same time he would make a backhand past to a wide open Ethan Gage who was sitting all along in the slot, Gage would collect the puck and fire a shot low glove side to tie the game with 3:44 remaining in the game. The Gamblers would go on to kill the penalty and get back to even strength. The both teams would have chances in the final 3:44 but both goalies were on top of their game and rising to pressure of playing for the Whalen cup. The Game would end in a tie and we would head to 3 vs 3 for 5 minutes of OT.
Third period: Blues- Seals 5 saves Gamblers- Van Schoick 8 saves
In OT both teams had plenty of odd man chances but both Seals and Van Schoick were not going to let anything by. The Blues had 3 more chances than the Gamblers as Van Schoick would finish the period with 7 saves and the Seals would finish with 4 saves. Due to time restrictions the Whalen Cup was going to be decide in a shoot out.

Gamblers- Topo LaCroix would skate in and fire a shot past Seals low glove side- GOAL
Blues-Chad Quirion take a quick snap shot- SAVE RVS
Gamblers- Max Woods- skate in fast and deke- SAVE Seals
Blues- Tyler White- Skate in and shoot 5-hole- SAVE RVS
The Gamblers win the WHALEN CUP! This is the Gamblers second Whalen Cup, the last one they won in 2008 in their inaugural season.
